Situated on the Chambal River, Kota is a city whose history can be traced back to 12th century A.D. when the Hada Chieftain, Rao Deva appropriated the territory and founded Bundi and Hadoti. However in the early 17th century A.D during the rule of Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor, Rao Ratan Singh, who used to rule over Bundi, gifted the smaller principality of Kota to his son and successor Madho Singh. Kota became a part of the British Empire during the first quarter of the nineteenth century and later when India became independent it became a part of the state of Rajasthan. Places of Interest
Maharaja Madho Singh Museum – Housed within the old palace, the museum showcases rich collection Rajput miniature paintings, sculpture testifying to superb skill, frescoes and armory. You can also see the artifacts that were personal belongings of the Kota rulers.
Jag Mandir– Jag Mandir is the little yet magnificent palace situated right in the middle of the picturesque artificial tank of Kishore Sagar. The beauty and appeal of the monument is enhanced manifold by the azure waters hugging it. Boating in this lake is a delightful experience.
Chambal Garden– This is a popular haunt of the picnickers. The center of the garden is occupied by a pond rife with crocodiles. This pond can be crossed by a rickety bridge. The crocodiles were once a usual sight but they have become quite rare now, thanks to merciless poaching.
Government Museum– The Government Museum exhibits a rich collection of rare coins, manuscripts, and artifacts that are typical and representative of the Hadoti sculpture. The archaeological section showcases sculptures dating back to the Gupta period. This section of the museum also boasts of a coins belonging to different dynasties. In the painting section there are a number of miniature paintings representative of Bundi, Kota, Nathdwara and Jaipur schools.
Haveli of Devtaji– Situated right in the heart of the busy market, Haveli of Devta Shridharji is remarkable for its brilliant frescoes and the rooms embellished with incredibly beautiful wall paintings.
How to Reach
By Air– The nearest airport is in Jaipur. There is a small aerodrome in Kota which is not functional.
By Rail– Kota has its own railway station. There are a number of trains that pass through the stop here. It takes about ten hours to reach Kota from Delhi by train.
By Road– The Kota bus stand is located in Bundi Road. Kota is connected to Ajmer, Chittorgarh, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Bikaner by a good bus service.
